Herbert Eulenberg was alive one of the most important German dramatist and writer. His pacifist attitude was transformed by the experience of World War I in an open anti-militarism, which would certainly be almost become him under the Nazi regime's undoing, he would have been in the Düsseldorf bourgeoisie and the German artistic circles not as well integrated. His portrait lives primarily from the intense gaze of the sitter, which is to escape almost impossible. This look, the narrow mouth and the book collected come to represent an intensive survey, urging them to take a stand and to examine the conscience. Certainly Corinth met so that the main characteristic of this man who was the face of adversity to his unconditional political and humanitarian commitment with all its consequences.
