In this scene from inside closed by dark curtains, a woman standing in profile and the allure of ancient statue holding the page of a music book on a table. On the table covered with an oriental rug arranged a lute, an hourglass and a dog-eared books fell to the ground. Behind her sat a musician playing the violin. On the left, there are other more imposing books posed on a stool where the painter has signed.

This painting belongs to a series of works by Cornelis Bega produced at the end of his life, from 1660. It is a different style scenes of peasants usually associated with his name. The female model that is found in other works by the painter might be his companion.
