The figure on the ladder is a particularly brilliant narrative interpolation.Pedro Orrente spent time in Venice and Rome. Upon his return to Spain he worked in Toledo, where he knew El Greco, whose work must suddenly have looked old fashioned compared to the new naturalism of Caravaggesque painting. This is the finest of a much-repeated composition.
