In August 1898 Gustav Klimt spent the first time the summer holidays in the Salzkammergut. In the company of family Flöge he spent several weeks in St. Agatha in Steeg on Lake Hallstatt. During that stay four landscape paintings were created: Farmhouse with roses (private property), Orchard (private collection, on permanent loan from the Leopold Museum, Vienna), fruit garden in the evening (private property) and After the Rain. Apart from a few small oil studies from Klimt's studies, these images testify Klimt's earliest employment with the genre of landscape painting.
