General information from Belvedere website (© - Belvedere - www.belvedere.at)

The name "palace of Belisarius" for this building is a fancy wording as it was widespread in the 19th century. In reality, it is in the building around the Tekfur Saray to those palace, which during the last 200 years of the Byzantine Empire the Basileus, the Byzantine emperor, served as a residence. Its formation time is set between the 12th and the early 14th century, the ground may extend into the early 10th century - to Belisarius, the most famous generals Emperor Justinian I, the traces of the building, however, can not be traced. The palace is located in the north of the city, between the outer and the inner wall of the last section of the Theodosian walls, but one of the Blachernenpalästen. The capture of the city by the Ottomans left the building meaningless be, which insets its expiration, by the different uses over the centuries (he served as a menagerie, ceramics factory, brothel, poorhouse and glass factory) was accelerated. Already at the time Stöcklers the palace presented as a ruin, which consisted only of vertical walls, and had neither a roof nor soils. The topographically faithful reproduction of the immediate vicinity of the Tekfur Saray meets the requirements of a Biedermeier view painting. The colorfully dressed decorative figures should illustrate the charm and the "Exotic" this city. [Sabine Grabner, in: Mayer-Oehring, Erika (eds.), Orient. Austrian painting from 1848 to 1914, exh.
